Lakers Guard Wants 'Super Team' With Kyrie Irving, Jimmy Butler
The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing for a big summer as they look to bring in reinforcements to help the team end their playoff drought which has lasted for a franchise-record six consecutive seasons. The team signed LeBron James on a four-year deal last summer, but even the 15-time All-Star’s arrival did not change their fortunes.
James has been vocal about wanting to win with the Lakers and confirmed his desire to help the team recruit elite level players this summer. They do have $38 million in max salary cap space to sign a big free agent and this year’s free agency class has some of the best in the league, namely Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson and Jimmy Butler among others.
Lakers shooting guard Josh Hart is hoping the team make some big moves in the free agent market this summer. He is keen for them to sign Butler and Irving in the summer and build a “super team” that will allow them to challenge for championships.
The 24-year-old also believes that the arrival of players like Butler and Irving will see the team sacrifice for each other, which will give them a better chance of winning consistently something they struggled with last season.
“S---, I hope we get a couple free agents. I hope we get a super team or some s---. I hope we get, s---, Jimmy, Kyrie. There’s no tampering for the players, so s---, I hope we get Jimmy, Kyrie... Just imagine if we had that,” Hart said during an appearance on the “The Eavesdrop Podcast”, as quoted on Silver Screen and Roll.
“Like bro, and the thing is, all those dudes are good dudes, so everyone would sacrifice for each other. And people don’t realize, when everyone sacrifices and the team wins at the end of the day, that’s the biggest thing,” the Lakers guard added.
Butler, who joined the Philadelphia 76ers via a trade prior to the start of the 2018-19 campaign, will become an unrestricted free agent and he has been linked with the Lakers. He was recently spotted wearing purple and gold sneakers, sparking speculation about a potential switch to the Lakers in the summer.
Irving’s situation, on the other hand, has been more complicated with the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks said to be the favorites to land the Boston Celtics point guard. The Lakers angle has been explored but the possibility of him reuniting with James has changed every day – going from possible to “no way in hell”.
Apart from free agents, the Lakers are also exploring the trade market and are almost certain to make a move for Antony Davis, who has asked for a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans. They failed with multiple offers earlier in the year, but are now armed with the No.4 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. If everything goes according to plan, there is a possibility of a super team emerging in Los Angeles next season.
