Lamar Odom Update: Former NBA Player 'Slowly Making Progress'; Communicating With Hand Signals, Moving From Bed With Assistance
It's been a whirlwind of a week for Lamar Odom. The former NBA player was hospitalized Oct. 13 after being found unconscious inside a legal brothel in Pahrump, Nevada. Although doctors initially thought the outcome looked bleak, Odom, 35, has woken up and shown serious signs of improvement.
According to E! Online, doctors have run a series of tests on Khloé Kardashian's estranged husband since he awoke, most of which he has passed with flying colors. Odom has been able to communicate verbally with Khloé, 30, saying "hey baby" and "good morning." He has also reportedly begun using hand signals as a method of communication. Odom has been taken off a ventilator and is currently using a non-rebreather mask. E! reports that doctors plan to slowly wean him off of it entirely in time, depending on how strong his body is.
The former Los Angeles Lakers player is also said to have been able to move from his hospital bed with the help of a wheelchair and has passed a swallow test, which is a good sign that he may not have suffered any brain damage. Odom is, however, still suffering from kidney failure and will need to remain on dialysis. A source told E! things are going well, but he's got a long road ahead of him.
"Lamar is slowly making progress. Today has been a good day," a source said. "There's a lot of praying going on."
Throughout his hospitalization Odom has been surrounded by loved ones. Just hours after learning of his condition Khloé, joined by mom Kris Jenner and sister Kim Kardashian West, boarded a private jet to Las Vegas. Upon landing she remained close by her estranged hubby's side. Kris, 59, was photographed outside of the hospital, visibly upset. Meanwhile it was reported that Khloé was "hysterical" at Odom's bedside. His children, Destiny and Lamar Jr., were later flown in.
The Kardashians have remained majorly silent about Odom's hospitalization, only speaking out once to say they would not be updating their individual apps during this difficult time. Many of them have, however, shared special messages about Odom on social media. Most recently Kim, 34, shared with her Instagram followers how special it was to be able to make him smile in the hospital.
Odom was hospitalized when an employee at Love Ranch South found him lying in bed facedown and unresponsive. She immediately called 911, revealing to the operator that she was unsure whether or not he was breathing and adding that he had a mucus-like substance and blood coming from his nose and mouth. Another caller, Richard Hunter, told 911 Odom was, in fact, breathing. In fact, he claimed it sounded like he was snoring. The former NBA star was rushed to Desert View Hospital where he was assessed and transferred to Sunrise Hospital to be treated.
Neither Khloé nor members of Odom's camp have spoken out about his recent progress. Doctors continue to run tests to check for any level of damage to his brain and other vital organs.
