Leaked Galaxy S8 Active Not Sporting Edge-To-Edge Display Like Flagship Device

Samsung appears to have ditched the beautiful Infinity Display when it was making the ruggedized version of the Galaxy S8. A newly leaked photo shows the Galaxy S8 Active sporting a display panel that’s very similar to LG G6’s instead of the edge-to-edge screen found on Samsung’s newest flagship phone.

Just recently, an image of the upcoming Active-branded Android handset was submitted to Wireless Power Consortium, a website for the group of leading manufacturers of devices with wireless charging. The photo shows a phone that has the typical candy bar form factor minus the physical buttons. The device conspicuously has thin bezels, making it appear very similar to the Galaxy S8’s rival handset, the LG G6.

The page for the Galaxy S8 Active mentions the model number of the device, which is SM-G892A. This matches the previously outed model number of the ruggedized Galaxy S8. Also indicated on the webpage is the Power Class 0 Receiver product type and the May 18, 2017 registration of the phone.

Comparing the Galaxy S8 Active with the Galaxy S8, it’s easy to see that the former is just the flat version of the latter. It doesn’t have the curves of the flagship phone, and it sports a thicker body that’s made to withstand knocks and bumps in compliant with the MIL-STD-810G standard of durability, as pointed out by SamMobile.

Up to this day, no information about the specs and features of the Galaxy S8 Active have been outed. However, several sources and reports have previously claimed that the ruggedized version will keep the standard components of the Galaxy S8. Hence, it could be sporting the Exynos 8895/Snapdragon 835 processor, 5.8-inch AMOLED display panel, 12-megapixel back camera and an 8-megapixel front shooter.

The upcoming handset is known internally as Cruiser. Early this month, we learned that among the different specs and features of the device, its battery could be the one to get a boost. So instead of a 3,000 mAh battery like the one found in the Galaxy S8, the Galaxy S8 Active could be sporting a 3,500 mAh battery — like the one powering the Galaxy S8+.

Samsung has yet to announce the release date of the Galaxy S8 Active. But many believe the tech giant is sticking to its usual timetable. Thus, the device could exclusively launch through AT&T in the U.S. next month. The carrier is known for releasing the ruggedized variants of Samsung’s flagship phones in June.

In other Samsung news, the company has announced this Monday that it is going to introduce its latest display inventions during the Society for Information Display 2017 event at the Los Angeles Convention Center this Tuesday. Among the prototypes it is showcasing at the conference, it is putting emphasis on its stretchable OLED panel that it could be using in future wearables, automobile displays and many more.

Samsung is also preparing to showcase its glassless 3D OLED panel and its ultra-HD liquid crystal display. The former will be useful in making 3D pop-up books, 3D games and virtual reality. The latter, on the other hand, will be useful in augmented reality, virtual reality and hologram applications.
