‘Legends Of Tomorrow’: Caity Lotz, Brandon Routh, Maisie Richardson-Sellers Tease Ray-Centric Episode
The Legends literally go back to Ray’s childhood days to save his life in Season 3, episode 4 of “Legends of Tomorrow.”
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Caity Lotz said that the Legends learn that Ray’s (Brandon Routh) life is in danger when he suddenly vanishes inside the Waverider. “He basically disappears, and we find out that he was killed as a kid, and so we’re like, ‘What the hell is going on?!’” said Lotz, who plays Sara on the CW series. “We have to go back to his childhood the day before he goes missing, and then figure out what killed him, and stop it from happening.”
As teased at the end of last week’s episode, young Ray has befriended a baby Dominator, the same mind-controlling aliens who invaded Earth-1 during last season’s Arrowverse crossover event. In an attempt to prevent his death, Ray tries to convince his younger self to stop interacting with the baby Dominator, but that causes a little conflict between the two Rays.
“Both sides of Ray are at odds with each other a little bit, because young Ray is all excited about the baby Dominator, but adult Ray has seen the future, knows something happens to young Ray, and is worried that the Dominator is the cause of it,” Routh told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s like Ray fighting with himself, which is unfair because it’s an adult fighting with a nine-year-old boy!”
While it’s a fun episode, Maisie Richardson-Sellers said that the hour is also very emotional as the Legends learn how sad Ray’s childhood was. “It’s great to see his backstory, and it’s actually really sad and quite touching, because you see why he is the way he is,” said Richardson-Sellers, who plays Amaya on the show. “He’s been bullied and he’s the outsider, and he’s this nerd who hides out in his bedroom, and becomes best friends with an alien.”
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Phil Klemmer revealed that tonight’s episode also features a dance number and an almost sex scene. “Someone has sex with — well, not fully, but somebody [tries] with a space alien,” Klemmer teased.
Elsewhere in the episode, according to the synopsis for the hour, Stein (Victor Garber) begins working on a secret project on the ship, which makes Rory (Dominic Purcell) and Jax (Franz Drameh) suspicious. Also, Legends’ latest recruit Zari (Tala Ashe) must find her place and learn to trust the team.
“Legends of Tomorrow” Season 3, episode 4, titled “Phone Home,” airs tonight at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
