Can J.R.R. Tolkien (Jack Turner) help the Legends resist the temptation of the Spear of Destiny?

In last Tuesday’s episode of “Legends of Tomorrow,” the team managed to secure the last remaining piece of the spear hidden within the flag that Neil Armstrong planted on the moon. And now that all the parts of the spear are accounted for, the challenge for the Legends in next week’s Season 2, episode 15 is to destroy the relic before someone from the team is tempted to use it for personal reasons and before it falls back into the hands of the Legion of Doom.

According to the synopsis for the upcoming episode, the Legends find themselves in France at the height of World War I where they enlist the help of a soldier named John Ronald Reuel Tolkien as they try to resist the temptation of the spear.

Tolkien, now known as J.R.R. Tolkien, is the British author of the classic high-fantasy novel “The Lord of the Rings,” which is basically an epic tale about Middle-Earth inhabitants trying to resist the temptation of a powerful ring. In the episode, the Legends meet Tolkien while he’s serving as a lieutenant for the British army stationed in France.

“When we were talking about doing an episode about destroying the Spear of Destiny, destroying this magical MacGuffin of unlimited power, it seemed to be a perfect parallel with Tolkien and our World War I Middle Earth send up,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim told Entertainment Weekly of how they came up with the idea of the Legends meeting Tolkien. “It was just one of those circumstances where this idea that we had six months earlier just aligned perfectly with the story we were breaking.”

Meanwhile, Season 2, episode 15 also marks the return of Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller), who appears to have been recruited by the Legion of Doom. As seen in the trailer for the episode, Leonard, a.k.a. Captain Cold, shows up while the Legends seem to be in a middle of a battle between armies.
