On Tuesday, it was announced that fan-favorite Leslie Jones will not be returning for the new season of NBC's "Saturday Night Live." The "Ghostbusters" star originally joined the cast as a writer but eventually transitioned to on-air talent in the fall of 2014.

According to Deadline, most "SNL" cast deals are for seven years, but the comedian opted to leave the sketch show before the end of her contract as she has only been there five seasons. The actors have the option to ask for early release. The writer-turned-performer originally joined the cast thanks to a recommendation from Chris Rock, states The Washington Post, even though she had auditioned on her own.

As for what's on the horizon for the performer, she is slated to star in her first stand-up comedy special for Netflix in 2020. The upcoming program is said to be an hour-long set, which she announced on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" In addition, she is also said to be gearing up to work on several other TV projects, including a reboot of the game show "Supermarket Sweep."

As reported by Deadline, there has been quite a bit of interest surrounding the reboot that Jones will be both hosting and executive producing. Traditional broadcasters and streaming services, such as Netflix, are rumored to be looking into obtaining the project. The revival is said to be coming to fruition largely in part due to the "Trainwreck" star's personal interest in the Al Howard-created show. The original ran from 1965-67 on ABC, followed by reboots on Lifetime (1990-95) and Pax (1999-2003).

During her time on "Saturday Night Live," Jones received three Emmy nominations, two for supporting comedic actress and one for co-writing the music and lyrics to "The U.E.S.," a sketch she performed with actor James McAvoy that was an ode to the Upper East Side.

"Saturday Night Live" will return for its 45th season Sept. 28. at 11:30 p.m. on NBC.
