LG Trademarks V90 In Mexico Even Before The Release Of The V40
LG has been releasing new V-series Android phones left and right and it looks like the company has no plans on stopping anytime soon. It’s been discovered recently that the company has already trademarked the LG V90 even before the launch of the LG V40 later this year.
The company trademarked the LG V90 name in Mexico, as first discovered by the Dutch website LetsGoDigital. The trademark was filed at the Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial and the product has been given a Class 9 classification, which is typical for devices like smartphones.
The LG V90 trademark may indicate that the South Korean company has long-term plans for the V-series. The last time the company launched a V-series phone was back in May with the LG V35 ThinQ. The follow-up to that device, the LG V40 ThinQ, is already expected to make its debut this September and it might possibly be released in October.
GSM Arena speculates that LG may have filed the V90 trademark in Mexico to thwart other companies from using the same product name in the country. This could also mean that it will still take a few years before an actual LG V90 smartphone is released based on LG’s current product naming scheme and release schedule.
Another possibility here is that LG might be preparing a whole new product that will be named the V90. The trademark is filed under Class 9 and it covers a wide variety of other mobile devices, including TVs, headsets and even batteries. This seems to be very unlikely, but it is indeed in the realm of possibilities.
Earlier this year, LG vice chairman Cho Sung-jin announced that the company won’t be sticking to its typical yearly release schedule for its smartphones. He also confirmed at the time that they plan on retaining existing models longer by releasing more variants. “We will unveil new smartphones when it is needed. But we will not launch it just because other rivals do,” Cho said at the time. “We plan to retain existing models longer by, for instance, unveiling more variant models of the G series or V series.”
LG’s next major smartphone is expected to be the LG V40 ThinQ, which is already rumored to arrive with a total of five cameras. The phone will apparently have triple cameras on its back, and dual cameras up front. The V40 ThinQ might be released in October to avoid Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9 in August and Apple’s trio of new iPhones in September.
