  • Messi and Barcelona players' earnings after 70% wage cut revealed

Lionel Messi and Barcelona’s first-team players’ weekly wage cut due to the coronavirus pandemic has been revealed.

The coronavirus pandemic continues to spread across the globe. And as the world unites to fight the killer virus, soccer found a way to contribute. Many soccer players reportedly agreed to temporarily reduce their wages, a gesture which has been universally praised by soccer fans around the world.

But the move also reportedly caused conflict among the players. While some players at various clubs have already agreed to wage cuts, ESPN reported that a number of Barça’s players have rejected a proposal to have their wages significantly reduced as the club attempts to minimize the financial impact of the ongoing pandemic.

Earlier this week, Messi was already lauded for donating €1 million ($1,109,633) as his way of joining the battle against coronavirus. However, reports claimed that despite being aware that the money will be split between Hospital Clinic in Barcelona and another medical centre in their home country, Messi, along with three other Barcelona captains, disagree with the idea.

Spanish newspaper AS confirmed that Barcelona’s four captains Messi, Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto have reportedly rejected the proposal. Negotiations between the club’s captains and the board are said to be on going.

Sources claimed that the wage cut will be close to 70% of the players’ current wage. The Daily Mail and EuroFootballRumous recently made a close estimation of how much will actually be cut from Barcelona’s first-time players’ earnings.

Give Me Sport made a comprehensive list of what Barca's first-team players earn now, what they will be earning should their wages be slashed by 70%, as well as how much they would lose on a weekly basis. As expected, among all the Barca players, Messi will lose the biggest chunk of money from his current wage. With a current rate of £500,000 per week ($620,700), the six-time Ballon d’Or winner will only get £150,000 per week or ($186,085) after the 70% cut.
