  • Liverpool may be planning a shock move for Watford star Ismaila Sarr
  • Sarr is reportedly Manchester United's alternative for Jadon Sancho, who is expected to cost upward of £100 million ($125 million)
  • Liverpool's past issue with Watford owners regarding Piotr Zielinski may hinder their move for Sarr

Liverpool may be plotting a “shocking move” for Watford winger Ismaila Sarr, who was also reported to be Manchester United’s alternative for Jadon Sancho. But a past conflict between the Reds and Watford owners could ruin everything, a report said.

After winning the Premier League title, Liverpool is now looking to add more talent into its squad. There is already a growing list of notable prospects linked to a move to Anfield, but Jurgen Klopp’s side seems eager to pursue more options. According to Teamtalk, U.K. sources said Liverpool is reportedly interested in signing Watford star winger Sarr.

The Reds are said to be one of the clubs who have noticed Sarr’s impressive performance in the Premier League this season after he scored five goals and provided five assists. But ultimately, the 22-year-old impressed Klopp when he scored two goals in Watford’s stunning 3-0 win over Liverpool back in February.

Watford was convinced that Sarr has what it takes to be a future star, making him a club-record signing.

However, Liverpool.com revealed that there is an old issue that may hinder Liverpool from signing Sarr this summer. Apparently, back in 2016, Watford owner Giampaolo Pozzo and Liverpool had a conflict over a former prospect, Piotr Zielinski, who was playing for Udinese at the time, a club also owned by the Pozzo family.

Zielinski had been a target of Liverpool for quite some time, and Klopp was even said to have held meetings with him. Pozzo evidently wanted to keep Zielinski despite concrete offers from big clubs. However, Zielinski was later seen in photos wearing a Liverpool shirt, something which angered Pozzo.

Shortly after the photo incident, Pozzo reportedly decided that his in-demand player should not end up sealing a deal with Liverpool. In order to cut Zielinski and Liverpool’s progress, Pozzo accepted what was reported to be a similar offer from Napoli, the club Zielinski eventually joined in August 2016.

Aside from its past issues with Watford, Liverpool may also face competition in signing Sarr. The youngster has also been linked to Manchester United, with reports claiming Sarr could be considered as a cheaper alternative for the club’s top target Sancho.

The Red Devils have been courting Sancho, who is expected to cost upward of £100 million ($125 million), for quite some time. The Borussia Dortmund star has become one of the highest-valued prospects this summer, and United could really save funds by making Sarr an alternative signing.
