Liverpool Want To Sign $58M Midfielder Whose Dog’s Name Is 'Anfield': Report
KEY POINTS
- Liverpool are interested in signing Marcos Llorente next summer
- Llorente is currently contracted with Atletico until 2024
- He scored twice at Anfield earlier this year
Liverpool FC reportedly want to sign Atletico Madrid’s attacking midfielder Marcos Llorente, who scored twice at Anfield in the Champions League and as an honor to his performance, he named his new dog ‘Anfield.’
Llorente’s form has come to the attention of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and according to Spanish publication Don Balon, Liverpool are preparing a $58 million transfer move for Atletico’s Llorente in the summer of 2021.
The report has also stated that while Reds have begun talks with Llorente, who is currently contracted with Atletico until 2024, the La Liga side is doing everything to persuade the player to not leave Wanda Metropolitano at the end of the 2020-21 season.
Liverpool, who were the defending champions in the 2019-20 Champions League season, narrowly lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in an away Round of 16 fixture. Llorente did not have a goalscoring image ahead of Atletico Madrid’s trip to Merseyside earlier this year in the second leg of their Champions League fixture against Liverpool.
Klopp’s side looked on course to the quarter-finals after goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino, but a quickfire double from Llorente eliminated the reigning champions from the tournament.
After the exceptional victory at Anfield, Llorente shared a photo of his new pug staring out into the distance on his Instagram story with a caption, "Anfield viendo la vida pasar," translated into English as Anfield (the dog’s name) watching life go by.
Even though the 25-year-old attacking midfielder is being linked with Liverpool, Klopp already has enough options for the position such as Takumi Minamino, Xherdan Shaqiri, and even Curtis Jones, who is more than capable of playing a similar role for the Reds. Moreover, Liverpool may want to invest in a defender, considering they have lost Virgil van Dijk in the remainder of this season to an ACL injury.
