Los Angeles Dodgers Lineup 2020: Mookie Betts, Cody Bellinger, Gavin Lux Form NL's Best Offense
The best offense in the National League just got better. The Los Angeles Dodgers traded for Mookie Betts, adding a perennial All-Star to a team that’s led the NL in runs scored in two straight years.
The Dodgers sat atop the NL in several offensive categories last season with 886 runs scored, 279 home runs, a .472 slugging percentage and an .810 OPS. Those numbers could improve in the 2020 MLB season now that Betts is in the fold.
Betts’ average season over the last four years has been MVP-worthy: a 306/.384/.539 slash line, 29 home runs, 94 RBI, 25 stolen bases and 149 games played. The outfielder had a .915 OPS in 2019 and led the league with 135 runs.
Los Angeles’ projected lineup is so good that Betts, regarded by many as the second-best player in all of baseball, might not be the best hitter on the team. Cody Bellinger is the reigning NL MVP. He won the award by hitting .305/.406/.629 with 47 home runs and 115 RBI.
Bellinger has a .928 OPS with 111 home runs in his three big-league seasons.
Four other players return to the Dodgers after posting an OPS north of .800 in 2019. Five Los Angeles hitters have been All-Stars within the last three seasons.
Max Muncy made his first All-Star team in 2019, hitting .251/.374/.515. He’s hit exactly 35 home runs and finished 15th in the NL MVP voting in both of his seasons with the Dodgers.
Justin Turner hit .290/.372/.509 with 27 home runs in 135 games. The third baseman is hitting .302/.381/506 in six seasons with the Dodgers.
Corey Seager hit .272/.335/.483 with 19 home runs in his first year back from Tommy John Surgery. The shortstop was a top-three MVP candidate in 2016 and an All-Star in 2017.
Will Smith is on his way to becoming an All-Star. Previously a top prospect, the catcher hit .253/.337/.571 with 15 home runs in just 54 games as a rookie.
Gavin Lux is a top-three prospect in all of baseball. The second baseman dominated Triple-A in 2019 with 13 home runs, 39 RBI and a .392/.478/.719 slash line in 49 games. He had a .705 OPS in 23 games as a September callup.
Outfielder A.J. Pollock had a .795 OPS in his first year with the Dodgers. Utility man Chris Taylor had a .794 OPS in 124 games.
Alex Verdugo was sent to the Boston Red Sox in the trade that brought Betts and David Price to Los Angeles. Joc Pederson was traded to the Los Angeles Angels in a separate deal.
