Louisiana Man Ambushes Deputies Responding To Domestic Violence Complaint, Then Fatally Shoots Himself
A man in Louisiana fatally shot himself in the head after ambushing two deputes with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.
The deputies responded to a residence around 7.15 p.m. Monday night after receiving a domestic violence complaint. While the officers were speaking to the woman, who was involved in the dispute, in the driveway of the home, a man “came around the side of the residence armed with a firearm.”
The man, later identified as 50-year-old Jeffrey Scott Mendoza, opened fire at the officers, who returned fire. Mendoza then went inside shot himself in the head. He succumbed to injuries on the spot.
According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, “Two patrol units were damaged by the gunfire, and one deputy sustained minor injuries related to being struck by shattered glass.”
Reports stated that nobody else was injured in the incident. Meanwhile, the deputies will be on administrative leave till an investigation justifies them returning the fire.
“The remains of the deceased were turned over to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office who will make identification and determine the official cause and manner of death. The investigation remains active and ongoing and no additional information is available at this time,” the sheriff’s office said.
