Madison Beer Addresses Leaked Underage Nudes, Says She Wants To 'Free' Herself
On International Women’s Day on Sunday, singer Madison Beer decided to speak openly about an issue that she has been holding in for a while.
The 21-year-old took to Twitter to share her personal experience with leaked nudes, an incident that first occurred when she was underage and whose photos recently surfaced again, E! Online reported. Beer decided to address the issue not “to distract from” the other important problems of the world, but to share her stance on “shaming women.”
"when i was around 14 and exploring my body & sexuality, i sent very private snapchat's of my body to a boy i really liked at the time [sic]," she continued. "i sent these, at 14, thinking i could trust the boy as we had known each other for years & shared feelings for one another, but of course he shared it with all his friends."
Beer said she was forced to deal with calls from “a few people close” on her birthday on March 5 who told her additional footage from her teenage years was circulating online.
“if only i could express the trauma and shame this has reopened for me,” she wrote. “all these years i’ve had perpetual anxiety.”
The singer admitted to having trust issues because of the incident in her youth and said that she felt constantly judged and shamed for something that was out of her control because she was told it could ruin her career.
Beer said she now wants to speak up about the incident to empower other young women who might face similar struggles. She added that she chose International Women’s Day to share her story so that she could “free” herself from the “weight” she’s carried all these years.
“SHAME ON THOSE WHO SHAMED YOU,” she wrote. “own your mistakes as a young woman learning about the world. don’t let them define you. don’t let them keep you in fear.”
