Malcolm Butler Could Still See NFL Action With Dolphins This Season
KEY POINTS
- Malcolm Butler gets a lifeline after the Dolphins give him a chance workout
- Butler has not played a game since 2020 when he was still with the Titans
- He could be a key defensive addition to the Dolphins if he impresses the coaching staff
Malcolm Butler had hoped to play a game this 2022-23 NFL season with the New England Patriots, but unfortunately, it never came to fruition after he was placed on the injured reserve list and then parted ways with the franchise.
However, hope floats on the horizon for the two-time Super Bowl champion as je was reportedly brought in by the Miami Dolphins for a workout on Tuesday, October 25 according to Field Yates of ESPN.
The veteran cornerback was released by the Patriots last August 25 following an injury settlement, just nine days after he was relegated to the reserve ranks.
Butler signed with the Patriots in March and saw action in the team's preseason opener.
He recovered a fumble in that game but ended up injuring his hip.
It was the first outing for the 32-year-old NFL player coming off a one-year retirement.
Before that, he spent four seasons with the Tennessee Titans.
If he makes the grade, Butler would be a vital addition to the Dolphins.
Miami already boasts of a host of former Patriots' players on their end, including Trey Flowers, Elandon Roberts and Eric Rowe.
Aside from that, one thing working for Butler is his familiarity with defensive coordinator Josh Boyer as both were together with the Pats from 2012 to 2018.
As of this writing, there remains no official word on how his workout with the Dolphins went.
In any case, the 2015 Pro Bowl player could be worth giving a chance to prove that he still has some gas left in the tank.
So far, the Dolphins have allowed opponents 23.6 points per game.
If he is up to par, Butler could be a good addition to stiffen their defensive end.
The road ahead to proving he can still play professional football has not been easy on Butler.
In his last stint with the Titans, the Mississippi native started in all 16 games in 2020.
After that, he signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2021 but ended up announcing his retirement in August 2021, citing personal reasons.
He came out of retirement seven months later, signing a two-year deal with the Patriots, but it didn't turn out so well.
Butler has another opportunity to extend his shelf life in the professional ranks, and all that it takes is a stamp of approval from Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel.
