Man Arrested For Sexually Assaulting 92-Year-Old Woman After Breaking Into Her House

A man in Sydney has been arrested for sexually assaulting a 92-year-old woman during a home invasion.

Craig Wheatman, 28, was arrested Sunday, a day after he committed the brutal assault that left the elderly woman with cuts and bruises all over her face and body, NBC-affiliated 9News reported.

Police went to the woman's house Saturday early morning following reports that a man had broken into the home and sexually assaulted her before stealing cash.

Her son called the emergency services after the woman activated her emergency medical alarm. She was immediately taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She has been discharged and is now with her relatives.

A video released by the police shows Wheatman, in handcuffs, being led into the back of a police wagon. He has been charged with break and enter, assault and sexual assault offenses. According to the court documents, Wheatman had sexual intercourse with the elderly woman without her consent to "intentionally inflict" harm on her.

At a press conference, Detective Acting Superintendent Chris Goddard said police were overwhelmed by the crime. "It's probably one of the most appalling I've seen in 30 years of policing. It's a heinous crime... they're some of the most significant charges in the crimes act... these offenses carry significant jail time," he said.

Police said the woman was too disoriented to be interviewed on Saturday. "I'm pleased to say (the woman) is doing remarkably well considering the circumstances," he said.

Wheatman refused to appear before the Burwood Local Court on Monday and he also did not apply for bail. Wheatman has not entered a plea and his matter has been adjourned until March 13.

Last year, a teenager from Western Australia was arrested for attempting to rape a 93-year-old woman in her home. The 18-year-old was charged with attempted aggravated sexual penetration without consent, aggravated indecent assault and aggravated burglary. He was arrested within hours of the attack.
