A man killed his three daughters before hanging himself outside his home because he was upset over his wife giving birth to another girl child. The incident took place in the western Indian state of Gujarat on Tuesday.

Police said the man, identified as 35-year-old Rasik Solanki, killed his daughter – aged seven, five and three – by pushing them into a well. He then hanged himself. Investigation revealed the man worked as a farm laborer and had financial difficulties.

"Solanki's relatives told us that he was upset after his wife delivered a fourth girl just ten days back. He was also suffering from financial crunch," a police officer said, adding that the man’s wife and the newborn were at their maternal place when the incident took place.

The investigation was ongoing and the bodies of the victims were retrieved from the well.

The incident comes less than a month after a woman killed her seven-day-old granddaughter in the Indian state of Karnataka because she was not happy it was a baby girl. The newborn girl’s mother left the baby in the care of Parameshwari and went to the washroom. When she returned, she did not find the baby anywhere and immediately called the police. The responding officers found the baby lying motionless on the ground in a pool of blood and rushed to the hospital where she was declared brought dead. Investigation revealed that Parameshwari threw her granddaughter from the rooftop as she “was not happy about the baby being a girl.”
