A 38-year-old man, who was left badly scarred after a brutal bull attack, has got a new face, thanks to a series of reconstructive surgeries.

Karnee Bishnoi, from the state of Rajasthan, was in a coma for four days after he was viciously attacked by the bull last September, The Times Of India reported.

Bishnoi, who worked in a consumer goods company, was driving with the side window of his car rolled down when the incident happened. He slowed down his vehicle to allow a herd of bulls to pass. But, one of the bulls came charging at him.

The animal smashed his nose with its horns, lacerated his lips and gouged out the right eyeball before piercing through the front lobe of his brain. Bishnoi was pulled out of the car and thrown onto the road. However, he managed to survive.

He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but the doctors weren't able to do much. "They managed to stem the bleed with packing and some big sutures but expressed their helplessness to go any further as they lacked the expertise," Dr. Sunil Choudhary, a doctor who treated him, said in a statement.

He was later moved to a super specialty hospital. He underwent a 10-hour surgery at the facility as doctors "painstakingly put together bone, flesh, nose pieces." Besides severe brain injuries, his nose and lips were crushed.

After this, he had to undergo a second surgery, which lasted nine hours. During the procedure, doctors "not only managed to save his life but also restored the face to a human form."

The right side of his face was paralyzed even after that. He couldn't smile or lift his right side eyebrow or forehead.

Four months later, Bishnoi underwent reconstruction surgery using some ingenious constructive techniques, like the "forehead muscle to muscle neurotization."

By July, he was able to move his right eyebrow and forehead. "He is getting better every day and his facial shape and symmetry are also good," the statement said. He will undergo more procedures in the next few months for artificial eye and scar revisions.

"It feels like a rebirth," Bishnoi told Times Of India.
