A man out on parole was arrested after he tried to fake his death by killing a daily wage worker, setting his face on fire-- all to escape conviction.

The incident took place in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The suspect's wife was also arrested for allegedly assisting her husband in the conspiracy, The Indian Express reported. The accused, identified as Sudesh Kumar, was facing conviction for allegedly murdering his 13-year-old daughter in 2018. He was recently out on parole due to COVID-19 regulations, authorities told the publication.

The deceased's body was recovered on Nov. 20 in an empty plot in Loni Border. The face was completely disfigured but the cops reached the residence of Kumar's wife, Anupama after a Unique Identification card issued by the Indian government, called Aadhaar Card, was recovered from near the victim's body.

"On November 20, a body was discovered in an empty plot in Loni Border. The face was unrecognisable and an Aadhaar card was found which led us to Anupama’s house. She identified the deceased as her husband. We had doubts about the version and it was found in an investigation that her husband had killed someone resembling him as he was out on parole," Dr Iraj Raja, SP Rural Ghaziabad, told the outlet.

After Kumar was released from custody, he hired daily wage laborers to repair his roof. This is when he discovered that one of the laborers, Doman Ravidas, was of his built and height. It was then that Kumar hatched a plan to fake his death by killing Ravidas.

Kumar invited Ravidas for drinks on Nov. 19 and gifted him some clothes. After Ravidas came completely under the influence of alcohol, Kumar hit him with the leg of a wooden cot and killed him, according to News 18. He later burned Ravidas' face with burning paper and put his Aadhaar card inside his pocket. The wooden leg and cycle used in the murder of Ravidas and transporting his body were recovered by the cops.

After killing his daughter in 2018, Kumar had left her body in an abandoned plot and lodged a complaint with the cops about the kidnapping. Police had arrested and sent him behind the bars after finding inconsistencies in his statements.

This time, a fresh case of murder and fraud has been filed against Kumar and his wife and the two accused are currently in custody.

In December 2018, an Indian man was arrested after he allegedly killed a laborer and burned the latter’s body in his car for faking his death to bag his own life insurance money. The report of the man's death was initially registered at a local police station after the victim's body was found in a car, burned beyond recognition. However, it was later revealed during an investigation that it was a laborer, identified as Raju, who was killed by strangulation and his body was set ablaze after placing it inside Akash's car.
