  • The accused killed his wife and kids in February 2018
  • He then killed his friend and left his own identity card beside the body to fake his death
  • The accused was arrested Wednesday, three years after the killings

The skeletal remains of a woman and her two children were exhumed from their home, three years after they were killed by her husband, who also killed his friend to fake his own death.

The incident took place in the northern Indian city of Noida. The accused, identified as 35-year-old Rakesh, killed his wife and kids, aged 3 and 1, in February 2018 to marry another woman and buried their bodies in the basement of their home. The accused then pretended that his wife and children were missing and filed complaints against her family members, Catch News reported.

As the woman’s family members ran pillar to post looking for the mother and her kids, the accused hatched a ploy to fake his death with the help of his father. As per their plan, Rakesh killed his friend and decapitated his body. He then left his own identity card beside the body to show that the corpse was his. The accused’s father "identified" his son’s body.

After some time, police got clues that Rakesh was living in another town under a fake name and that the body was misidentified. On Wednesday, Rakesh was finally traced and taken into custody.

During interrogation, the man confessed to killing his friend. He also admitted that he had killed his wife and children. Following this, the officers went to his home and exhumed the bodies of the deceased. The bodies were sent for DNA testing to confirm their identities.

A police officer told the Times of India that a cement wall was built over the spot where the bodies were buried.

The charges levied against the accused were not known and it was also not clear if his father has been taken into custody for helping his son cover up the crime.

Earlier this year, the skeletal remains of a man were exhumed from his home in the southern Indian state of Kerala, two years after he was reported missing by his family members. An investigation revealed the victim was killed by his brother during an argument.
