Man Pours Cleaning Acid Into Girl's Mouth, Slits Her Throat After Failed Assault Attempt
A man in India allegedly poured acid into the mouth of a 14-year-old girl after the latter resisted his attempt to sexually assault her. The incident has triggered outrage from the public.
The incident happened in SPSR Nellore district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh on Monday evening. The girl was alone in her house when the accused allegedly barged into the residence, news outlet CNN-News 18 reported. The girl ran to the washroom to escape him but the man allegedly broke through the locked door and attempted to sexually assault the teen, the outlet reported.
As the girl resisted, the accused allegedly poured toilet cleaning acid into her mouth and face. The attacker, identified only as Nagaraju, slit the girl's throat when she screamed and then fled the scene.
The young girl was found by neighbors and was transported to the hospital.
Deputy police superintendent at Nellore rural, Y. Harinath Reddy, said the girl is currently in stable condition, Hindustan Times reported. He also confirmed that while Nagaraju was taken into custody for questioning, he will be formally arrested and produced "before the local court for judicial remand on Wednesday."
The public has since called for the maximum punishment for Nagaraju. State agriculture minister Kakani Goverdhan Reddy has assured the public that the government will ensure the accused is punished and help will be extended to the girl and her family.
News of the incident came just a week after a 17-year-old girl was attacked with acid in the Indian state of Jharkhand by a boy believed to be in the same class as the young girl.
Speaking with The Indian Express, the girl's mother said she was sleeping with her daughter when the suspect poured acid on the teen's face and body. The mother said her hands and back were also burnt from the acid attack but that her daughter's condition was much worse.
