A man was arrested Sunday, a week after he pushed his pregnant wife off a cliff in northern Thailand.

Police said 33-year-old Yu Xiaodong was arrested after his wife, 32-year-old Wang Nan, recorded a statement saying her husband had pushed her down the ravine earlier this month. The woman fell 110 feet off the cliff through thick layer of tree branches. Though Nan survived the fall, she suffered serious injuries including broken bones.

Police said they were suspicious of the husband as he maintained distance while the rescuers helped the woman at the scene. An investigator also overheard the woman asking her husband about why he pushed her. The suspicion only grew stronger when Xiaodong gave conflicting statements about the incident. He told the investigating officers it was an accident.

The wife could not reveal the truth to the officers as Xiaodong was continuously keeping an eye on her at the hospital. However, one day the woman asked the doctors to keep the husband away as she wanted to speak to the officers. Accordingly, the doctors asked Xiaodong to visit his wife only during certain hours each day. The woman then contacted the police and provided the account of the incident.

Nan told the officers that her husband pushed her down the ravine and she could not inform them earlier as her husband was always beside her. Nan said he had also threatened to kill her if she spoke the truth.

Police said the couple had an import and export business and all the assets belonged to the woman. Xiaodong, who was from a poor family, accumulated a huge debt and asked his wife to help repay it. However, when she agreed to pay only half, Xiaodong plotted to kill her in order to get all her assets worth millions. Xiaodong was charged with attempt to murder and remained in custody as the investigation was ongoing.
