Man Slits Woman’s Throat For Rejecting Marriage Proposal, Then Attempts To Kill Self
A 23-year-old man in India allegedly slit a woman's throat for refusing his marriage proposal.
The incident occurred in the southern city of Visakhapatnam. The accused, identified by his first name Srikanth, had asked the girl to marry him. However, when she refused, he attacked her Wednesday and then tried to slit his own throat, the News Minute reported.
The police said the man and the woman, who were neighbors, were rushed to a hospital and underwent treatment. They were said to be in stable condition.
The trouble between the two began six months ago when Srikanth and his parents approached the girl's family, asking her to marry him.
“Her parents didn’t agree. Since then, he continued to pursue her despite the proposal being rejected. Recently, there might have been a trigger point. He attacked her in a planned manner, and slit his own throat too,” senior police officer Aishwarya Rastogi told the media.
On Wednesday, the girl's brother found the door of her room locked from the outside. He opened it and went inside to find his sister injured.
The police launched an investigation and registered Section 307 (attempt to murder), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 309 (suicide attempt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Last month, a 17-year-old girl was found dead near a temple in the city with her throat slit. An acquaintance was suspected to have killed her. The girl's father told media outlet TV9 the accused, who is three to four years older than the victim, had known her and her brother since their school days. The father alleged the accused had stalked and harassed the victim in the past.
In another incident, a 20-year-old woman was killed in October by her neighbor with a knife. According to news reports, the girl was alone at home when the incident happened. She was found with knife injuries to her throat, abdomen and hand. The accused also had injuries to his neck and wrist.
