A man was charged with animal cruelty after he killed his family dog while his wife encouraged him. The incident took place in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad on Saturday.

Rama Devi was walking down the stairs when she saw her brother, Nagaraju, killing the canine while his wife encouraged him to do so. When she tried to stop him, he threatened to kill her and her mother. Devi then approached the police and filed a complaint.

“I saw my brother Nagaraju and his wife stamping on the dog’s neck, while I was coming down the stairs. My brother also lifted the dog by the neck and strangled it,” she told local daily the Times of India.

“My brother has also killed my other pets by strangling them or throwing them under a train on the railway track in front of my house,” she said, adding that the accused was always drunk.

Meanwhile, Pravallika of Compassionate Society for Animals, a non-profit animal welfare organization, said the dog started barking at the accused when he reached home drunk and in a fit of rage, he attacked and killed the canine.

Following Devi’s complaint, the accused was taken into custody and charged with animal cruelty. Police were investigating the incident and trying to find out if Nagaraju’s wife was involved in the canine’s killing. Though reports suggested that the man committed the crime following a dispute with his sister over property, police were yet to confirm it. Meanwhile, the dog’s body was sent to an animal hospital for autopsy.
