A man in Singapore has been jailed for throwing his 2-month-old daughter at a cop while trying to escape capture.

The unidentified 40-year-old man was sentenced to 17 months in jail Monday after he pleaded guilty to charges of endangering the safety of a child. The incident happened last year, The Straits Times reported.

The man, who had a history of drug abuse, was on the "wanted" list after he failed to appear for a urine test in July 2019. On Jan. 18, 2020, he went to a police station with his wife and child to report a traffic accident related to his company van. When a police officer at the station recognized the man, he tried to flee.

In an attempt to evade capture, the man swung his infant daughter with one hand and tossed her at the cop who was chasing him.

The baby did not suffer any injuries as the officer managed to catch her safely. The officer quickly handed over the infant to a colleague. The man was nabbed following a brief chase.

On Monday, he also pleaded guilty to failing to present himself for a urine test while under a supervision order and domestic abuse charges for assaulting his wife, news outlet Channel News Asia reported.

The domestic abuse charges were filed against him after he assaulted his wife in an inebriated state in front of his children earlier this year. He was out on bail at the time.

The man reportedly slapped his wife multiple times, punched her head twice and pushed her. The woman fell down and her head hit the metal frame of a sofa. She tried to call the police but could not complete the call as her husband took the phone away. The phone operator who heard the commotion reported the incident to the police.

During his trial, the man told the court he would not repeat the offense. According to the law in Singapore, an offender can be jailed for up to four years and fined up to $4,000 for ill-treating a child.
