Manchester United icon, Sir Alex Ferguson, has revealed that Jurgen Klopp gave him a call at 3:00 o'clock in the morning after Liverpool won the 2019-2020 Premier League.
The former Manchester United legendary manager Ferguson has hailed Klopp, who recently was named the League Managers Association (LMA) of the Year.
Klopp — who claimed the award ahead of second-placed Chris Wilder of Sheffield United, who was last year’s winner, and Gareth Ainsworth of Wycombe — has grown close to Ferguson, who had managed Man Utd for as many as 27 years from 1986 to 2013.
Liverpool, under Klopp, has won their maiden Premier League, which was their first league title in as long as 30 years. After Klopp led the Reds to 99 points in the previous season, he won the prestigious award.
Ferguson, in a recent interview, hailed the German manager suggesting "your personality ran right through the whole club."
"Jurgen, fantastic. I have spoken about Leeds United, 16 years in the Championship, Liverpool, 30 years since winning that league: incredible. Really thoroughly deserved. The performance level of the team, really outstanding. Your personality ran right through the whole club. I think it was a marvelous, marvelous performance. I’ll forgive you for waking me up at half-past three in the morning to tell me you’d won the league. Thank you. But anyway, you’ve thoroughly deserved it, well done," said Ferguson.
Klopp, on the other hand, equally admires Ferguson as he mentioned the legendary Man Utd boss' name after winning the LMA award. He also revealed that he still cherishes a breakfast meeting with Ferguson, which was like "meeting the Pope" for Klopp.
"I am absolutely delighted to get this title. There are a lot of Liverpool names on this trophy – Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan, and Kenny looks like he is all over the trophy. Brendan Rodgers, too. But the main name is Sir Alex Ferguson. I know it is not 100 percent appropriate as Liverpool manager, but I admire him. He was the first British manager I met and we had breakfast together – I am not sure if he remembers but for me, it was like meeting the Pope. I never thought then I would be holding the Sir Alex Ferguson trophy in my hands," Klopp told Liverpool FC's official website.
