A husband who strangled his wife after a row over frozen fries and dumped her dismembered body "like garbage" has been sentenced to life in prison.
Thomas McCann, 49, of Great Manchester, England, admitted to strangling his wife Yvonne, 46, at their home on May 23, 2020. McCann was sentenced to life imprisonment Tuesday, with a minimum term of 13 years and four months before parole. He will serve no less than 12 years in prison, reported The Guardian.
The couple, who had been married for 24 years, began having marital problems after Yvonne, mother of four, had entered a relationship with another man in 2013, the prosecutor told the court. On the day of the incident, the couple's argument began after Yvonne had accidentally left a bag of frozen fries outside the freezer.
McCann reportedly "lost control" during the argument and strangled his wife inside the bathroom. He then chopped her body parts, wrapped her remains in eight plastic bags and dumped them in a nearby recycling center.
The victim's remains were discovered by dog walkers from a country park two days later. The police found surveillance videos showing McCann carrying bin bags to his car and while walking toward the country park. He was later seen throwing eight plastic bags into a dumpster at a recycling center.
McCann, who was found to have scratches to his cheek, arms and hands was arrested. "I killed my wife and disposed of her like garbage," he told the police, according to The Guardian.
It was later found that McCann had used his wife's cell phone to send and reply to the text messages from their children. He pretended to be the victim and told that she had walked out after their argument over fries.
"Your actions after the killing amount to serious aggravating factors." judge Alan Conrad told McCann during the sentencing as per BBC News. "The defense suggest a combination of self-interest and panic, but what you did makes a terrible case even more horrific and even more upsetting to those concerned"
"Yvonne McCann was a woman with a great deal to live for and a great deal to look forward to when her life was so cruelly cut short by you," Conrad said further.
"We are all really struggling with this. We love our mum very much, we also love our dad," Rachael Lawson, Yvonne's daughter, said in a victim impact statement as per BBC News.
