The noses of a man and a woman were chopped off by a mob accusing them of having an affair. The incident took place in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

According to local reports, the 28-year-old man visited the 35-year-old woman's home when her husband wasn’t in town. The woman’s father-in-law caught them and informed the villagers about it.

Police said the villagers beat the duo before chopping off their noses. Both of them were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and were listed stable. Meanwhile, the villagers who were involved in the incident, including the woman’s father-in-law, were taken into custody.

The incident comes a few months after a couple in the Indian state of Rajasthan was tortured by villagers for eloping. Police said a day after the couple eloped, the villagers found them and kidnapped them. They then tortured the couple and forced them to drink urine. Police arrived at the scene after receiving a report and freed the couple. A case was booked against 12 people involved in the incident.
