Manchester United Star Who Lost His Position To Bruno Will Remain At Old Trafford
KEY POINTS
- Jesse Lingard is contracted with Man Utd until 2022
- He spent the second part of last season at West Ham
- Lingard netted 9 goals for West Ham during his loan stint
Jesse Lingard will reportedly remain at Manchester United despite links with West Ham this summer.
Manchester United are happy to retain Lingard and want the English midfielder to fight for his place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, reported Sky Sports.
Lingard moved to West Ham during the 2021 January transfer window and had an impressive run with the Hammers during the second half of the 2020-21 campaign. He netted nine goals and six assists for West Ham in as many as 16 appearances in the Premier League as he helped the London Stadium side finish sixth in the league table.
While there have been rumors about West Ham wanting to sign Lingard permanently, Manchester United are not ready to part ways with the 28-year-old midfielder as yet. Lingard has made only one appearance for the Red Devils in the 2021-22 campaign. He came off the bench towards the closing stages of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Southampton earlier this month.
"Man United are happy for Lingard to remain at Old Trafford and to stay and fight for his place. Solskjaer has been very consistent in what he’s said about him – 'he’s part of my plans, he can play a big part for Man United this season.' He said if it wasn’t for Covid, Lingard would have started the first Premier League game against Leeds," Sky Sports News’ Dharmesh Sheth said on The Transfer Show.
Lingard was on the bench for Manchester United’s latest Premier League outing but the attacking midfielder ended up as an unused substitute as the Red Devils pulled off a close 1-0 win over Wolves Sunday.
“For Lingard, his priority this whole summer was to remain at Old Trafford. We know West Ham have been long-term admirers. Why wouldn’t they be after how well he did in the second half of last season. David Moyes has said if Man United did allow Lingard to leave, we would definitely be interested in him. As it stands though, it looks like he’s staying. But if a late offer comes in on Deadline Day, they would discuss it with Lingard and a collective decision would be made on what is best for the player," added Sheth.
Lingard joined the Manchester United academy as a seven-year-old and rose through the age groups before making it to the first team. He was loaned off to Leicester City for a month in November 2012 where he made his senior debut. Between 2015 and 2020, Lingard had become a regular member of the Manchester United squad before falling down in the pecking order, especially after the arrival of Bruno Fernandes as both the players have a similar role.
His career rejuvenated at West Ham and it is no secret that Lingard would want to regain his position at Old Trafford as well.
