Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is confident that one of his strikers has what it takes to follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham.
The No. 7 shirt has a deep history at Manchester United. All-time greats such as Ronaldo and Beckham were the last players who achieved success with the club wearing the said number.
But since the former’s departure in 2009, no other player who wore No. 7 was able to make an impact.
Now, Solskjaer thinks Red Devils’ summer signing Edinson Cavani can finally revive the glory of the iconic jersey number.
According to Solskjaer, to wear the No. 7 was the “first thing” Cavani asked of him upon joining Manchester United. With full confidence, the Norwegian gave the veteran striker the nod and it appears that he turned out to be right about his decision.
"He is definitely a starter," Solskjaer recently told ESPN of Cavani. "You don't classify a player of that quality as anything else.”
"He will probably start more games than he will not start,” he continued. “The first thing he asked me when I spoke to him was if he could wear the No. 7. When you think of the history of his career and the experience he has had, his personality from the chat I had with him and when I watched him before, it wasn't in doubt that he could handle the number seven shirt."
After eight appearances in his Manchester United debut season, Cavani has now tallied a total of three goals. Pleased with the former Paris Saint-Germain star, Solskjaer hinted at his desire to prolong his stay at Old Trafford.
"At the moment, it looks like [Cavani] he has a few years left in him so I wouldn't say anything else," the manager pointed out. "He has made a great impact when he has come here. ”
"Let's focus on improving everyone but he has a few years left in him,” he added. “He is so meticulous and professional, his habits and everything about him, shows why he has had the career he has. Even at the age, he is now he is one of the fittest players we have got."
Upon joining Manchester United in October, Cavani bared that Solskjaer reassured him that he has deserving to wear the “beautiful shirt.”
“I look forward to continuing to write my little story inside the book of football and I know that’s why my focus has to remain the same as always - work, work, work,” Cavani said on the club’s official website. “I have had a conversation with the manager and this has increased my desire to wear this beautiful shirt.”
