KEY POINTS
- David de Gea is the top-earner at Manchester United
- He earns just short of $27 million a year at Old Trafford
- Paul Pogba is second on the list of top earners at Man Utd
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is reportedly the top-earner of the club as he collects nearly $27 million annually.
De Gea, who has been a part of Manchester United since 2011, collects a mammoth wage of $521,000-a-week, as per Spotrac, one of the most reliable online sports team and player contract resources. The Spanish gloveman had earned a massive hike when he signed a new four-year deal in 2019.
After graduating from Atletico Madrid’s youth set-up, de Gea represented the La Liga side's senior team for two years before making a sensational switch to Manchester United in the summer of 2011. Ever since then, the 30-year-old has been Red Devils’ first-choice goalkeeper, helping his side win seven trophies. He kept 11 clean sheets in 38 league games in Manchester United’s title-winning campaign in 2012-13.
For three consecutive seasons from 2013–14 to 2015–16, de Gea was named Manchester United's Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, the first player in the award's history to win on three successive occasions. Overall, he has won the prestigious award four times.
The second player on the list of top earners at Manchester United is the club’s record signing Paul Pogba. The Frenchman earns $401,000-a-week and annually, the World Cup-winning player collects more than $21 million at Old Trafford. After graduating from the Red Devils’ academy, he made only seven senior appearances for the club before moving to Juventus. However, the Red Devils brought back Pogba from Turin at a transfer fee of $125 million ahead of the 2016-17 season.
The forward trio of Anthony Martial, Edinson Cavani, and Marcus Rashford, is next on the list with a weekly wage of $346,000, $291,00, and $277,000 respectively. Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire comes next on the list as he earns $263,000-a-week. The Old Trafford side signed Maguire from Leicester City ahead of the 2019-20 campaign at a transfer fee of $103 million, making him the most expensive defender in the world. Later in the same season, Maguire was handed the captain’s armband following the departure of Ashley Young to Inter Milan in the 2020 January transfer market.
Bruno Fernandes, who has been an integral part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side since his arrival at Old Trafford last year, collects a weekly salary of $249,000. It is believed the club is looking to tie him down to a new and improved contract, according to media outlet Sport Bible. Since his Red Devils' debut in February 2020, the Portuguese midfielder has played 62 games for the club and has chipped in with an aggregate of 34 goals and 21 assists.
In the ongoing 2020-21 season, Manchester United are placed second in the league table, 14 points behind leaders Manchester City. Solskjaer’s side is also alive in the Europa League.
