A Manhattan man was charged with sexual assault and burglary for raping and robbing a woman while posing as a delivery person.
Elijah Kelly, 23, has been arrested for raping the 27-year-old woman and robbing her at her home. Kelly knocked at the victim’s door claiming he was there to deliver a package at around 11.45 a.m. ET on Thursday.
When the victim opened her door, he forcefully entered her apartment and choked the woman until she lost consciousness, news outlet CBS Local reported, citing the police.
Kelly allegedly raped her when she regained consciousness. He also forcefully took the woman’s credit cards and debit cards along with the pin numbers. The woman called 911 as soon the suspect left her home and the emergency officials took her to a hospital.
The victim was treated and released from the hospital. The police were on lookout for the suspect after the incident and arrested him Saturday.
Kelly now faces charges of rape, robbery, assault felony, strangulation, burglary, grand larceny, criminal sex act and sexual abuse, a statement by the New York Police Department said.
According to the court documents, Kelly was previously charged in two other cases and was released without bail in both. He was accused of choking his ex-girlfriend, who had an earlier order of protection from him since March, on May 23.
Kelly was accused of “grabbing her neck with one hand and applying pressure on it, making it difficult to breathe,” according to his unidentified woman's criminal complaint, reported New York Post.
He also allegedly smashed the woman’s phone when she tried to contact the emergency officials. He faces charges including assault, criminal mischief and aggravated harassment in this case.
The suspect was also facing harassment and petty larceny charges for assaulting his own father in June. He reportedly jumped on his father during an argument with him and stole his mobile phone, according to the criminal complaint.
As part of the recent case of rape and burglary, Kelly is now being held on $100,000 cash bail or $300,000 bond.
