Thursday marks the birthday of Marilyn Monroe, the sizzling siren of Hollywood, who was born as Norma Jeane Mortenson. Monroe was an epitome of beauty and sensuality who won the hearts of millions with a concoction of fluffy hair, sleepy eyes and a charming smile.

Born June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, Monroe did not have a happy childhood with the first eight years of her life spent with a foster family, the Bolanders. Her mother, Gladys Baker was a paranoid schizophrenic who was frequently in and out of a mental institution. At the age of 16, Monroe married a fellow worker in an aircraft factory only to divorce a few years later.

Although the voluptuous beauty took up modeling in 1944 with even posed nude for a calendar in 1949, it was only in 1950 when she began to attract attention as an actress. She appeared in minor movie roles such as "The Asphalt Jungle" and "All About Eve." She played a mistress in both the films but her sex appeal and beauty started being appreciated by the audience.

When the deputy coroner, Thomas Noguchi, tried to obtain her other organs for testing, he was reportedly told they had been destroyed.
