‘Married At First Sight’ 2017 Update: Where Are Jamie And Doug Now?
Jamie Otis and Doug Hehner met at the altar in “Married at First Sight” Season 1, and they’re one of the show’s biggest success stories. The couple will hit their four year anniversary in March, and they’re back on TV with a new Lifetime show, “Jamie and Doug Plus One,” to celebrate the birth of their daughter Henley Grace.
Check out what we learned in the premiere of “Married at First Sight: Jamie and Doug Plus One”:
Mourning The Miscarriage
Jamie and Doug got pregnant last year, but they lost the baby at 17 weeks. Henley is going to be their rainbow baby (their first baby after the miscarriage), but they still remember the pain of losing their son, who they named Jonathan. They learned they were pregnant with Henley on Jonathan’s due date.
Doug Is Unemployed
At the beginning of the “Plus One” premiere, Jamie explains how stressful Doug’s job situation has been. He was laid off due to downsizing during Jamie’s pregnancy. They just got a new house in New Jersey, so their finances are being stretched thin right now. It’s been months, and his job interviews just haven’t panned out.
This ruins Jamie’s plan to be a stay at home mom. Doug wants to be the provider, but it just might not be an option. He decides to prepare for the possibility that he may be the primary caretaker for Henley and takes a parenting class.
Henley’s name
On the morning after they got married at first sight, Jamie didn’t remember Doug’s full name. She said Henley instead of Hehner, and now it’s going to be their little girl’s name.
Doug Keeps The Romance Alive
Before his wife’s due date, Doug knew that Jamie was getting stressed. She was trying to plan everything out, so he decided to surprise her with a romantic night in their backyard with candles, a slideshow of their memories and dancing.
The Birth
Jamie loves her daughter, but the “Married at First Sight” alum doesn’t feel bonded to her child yet. Doug automatically felt a bond. Jamie is concerned about the fact that she isn’t feeling connected.
She is especially worried about breastfeeding. Jamie has been a labor and delivery nurse for years, so she knows all about the process. She has even helped other mothers figure it out. So when she has trouble getting the baby to latch and is in a lot of pain, she is understandably freaked out.
Doug Gets A Job
Just days after Henley is born, Doug scores a new job. “It’s very satisfying knowing that I’m going to be a provider for the family,” Doug tells the cameras.
He misses her so much while he is at work. He already wishes he was home more. Still, his new job pays much less than the old one. Jamie is going to have to go back to work too.
Parental Issues
The “Married at First Sight” couple needs to save money, so they need to find free childcare for Henley. Doug automatically says his parents will watch her. Jamie isn’t sure her respects his family enough. They’ll do it, but she doesn’t want them to feel like they have to. She says Doug should be more grateful to his parents.
Jamie doesn’t know who her father is, and her mother often disappoints her. She and her mother exchanged a simple text about the baby, but she hasn’t come to visit. Jamie isn’t sure she even wants to invite her. She doesn’t want Henley’s grandmother to be in and out of her life.
Henley is young enough, however, that she won’t know the difference if Jamie’s mom bails again. Jamie decides to invite her over. Meanwhile, Doug’s parents are thrilled to watch Henley on a daily basis.
Christmas Party
In December, Jamie and Doug have a holiday party. Though Jamie’s mom doesn’t show, they have a lot of friends and family there. They all bring ornaments to help Henley celebrate her first Christmas.
“Married at First Sight: Jamie and Doug Plus One” will move timeslots next week. A half-hour episode will air at 10 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Dec. 26.
