In keeping with Martin Luther King Jr.'s day of remembrance, schools and offices are closed, but some establishments are open, and events are held to commemorate his activism.

What Is Closed On Martin Luther King Day 2023 In New York City?

  • Government buildings such as New York City public schools are closed.
  • City, state and federal government buildings are closed.
  • The United States Postal Service will also be closed, and there will be no mail delivery on MLK Day.
  • As a U.S. Federal Reserve holiday, many banks will be closed on Jan. 16. Bank services will remain available online.
  • The New York Stock Exchange will be closed on Jan. 16 and will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
  • Libraries around New York City will also be closed.
  • There will be no trash, composting or recycling collection on MLK Day.
  • Alternate Side Parking is also suspended on Monday.

Applebee's

Applebee's in Times Square and 50th and Broadway will be open until 12 midnight on Martin Luther King Day.

Costco

Costco branches in New York City will remain open on MLK Day 2023. The Brooklyn warehouse will be open on Monday on their regular schedule from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Queens and Manhattan warehouses, on the other hand, will be open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Federal Express

Federal Express branches in New York City will open and make deliveries on Monday. However, their service schedule might differ from regular work days.

United Parcel Service

UPS branches in New York City will open and make deliveries on Monday. UPS Express Critical services for urgent packages will also be available.

MLK-Serve-A-Thon

Hunger Free America will run volunteer events all over New York City as part of their 2023 MLK-Serve-A-Thon. They have been doing this yearly to honor MLK's life work "with service and action," as mentioned on their event site. They are also accepting volunteers.

The 37th Annual Brooklyn Tribute To Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music hosts the largest public celebration in New York in honor of the late activist. Their keynote event will be held at Howard Gilman Opera House this Monday, featuring artists, civic leaders, activists and community members. The keynote address will be delivered by nationally recognized civil rights lawyer and law professor Sherrilyn Ifill. Performers include Grammy-nominated performer Allison Russell and Vy Higginsen's award-winning choir Sing Harlem.

Harlem Gospel Choir MLK Day Matinee

The Harlem Gospel Choir, a world-famous choir that has earned praises from Diana Ross and Bono, will perform at the Sony Hall this Monday for an all-ages show with a full brunch menu.

Live On Flatbush Ave.: MLK Day Celebration

The Greenlight Bookstore on Flatbush Avenue will be the venue for the MLK celebration commemorating his life and legacy. The event is hosted by the Prospect Lefferts Gardens Neighborhood Association and features professor and author Jeanne Theoharis, photographer Celeste Lacy Davis and New York State Senator Zellnor Myrie.

Cinematters Film Festival

Throughout MLK weekend, the annual social justice film festival promotes social action and explores themes of injustice, responsibility and social inequality. Catch Cinematters 2023 films such as "Stranger at the Gate," "Repairing the World: Stories from the Tree of Life" and "Black Mothers Love & Resist" at the Manhattan JCC from Jan. 16 to 18.
