KEY POINTS

  • MSI is the native token linked to the Web3 project Druglike
  • The initiative was launched in July
  • MSI was trading down 7.76% at $0.000007045

The price of Martin Shkreli Inu's (MSI) token tanked by 95% last week with a report pointing out that the disgraced "Pharma Bro" liquidated a huge chunk of his MSI stake traced from a wallet he allegedly owns. But, it looks like the real story of the crash is not at all dramatic but rather a colorful one.

Fresh out of prison for his 2017 fraud conviction, Martin Shkreli launched in July the Ethereum-based token called Martin Shkreli Inu (MSI) tied to his Web3 project dubbed "Druglike." He called the project a software platform providing resources to people interested in early-stage drug discovery initiatives.

Bloomberg reported that Etherscan data showed a wallet linked to Shkreli dumped 162 billion MSI last Friday, a move that sent the price of the token to fall 95%.

When asked about the transfer, Shkreli said on Discord that he had been hacked. Gracing the SomeOrdinaryGamers YouTube channel run by Muta Anas, Shkreli spoke about the MSI dump, noting that it was the result of a hack originating from malware accidentally torrented while "Pharma Bro" was downloading some adult content.

The file, titled "BigTitsRoundAsses," was not a .mp4 but a .zip file loaded with 700MB of screensavers. It was because of this that a hacker or malicious actor was able to utilize a remote trojan and access his personal information, including of course the keys to his crypto wallet.

If his claims are true, it means that Shkreli did not check the extension of the file he was downloading and his carelessness caused MSI investors loads of money. What complicates the matter is that his actions cost investors hundreds of thousands of dollars and given his history of financial crimes, people question his credibility.

Following the crash, MSI's price is virtually zero. As of 4:55 a.m. ET Friday, the token was trading down 7.76% at $0.000007045 with a 24-hour volume of $253,417, according to the latest data from CoinMarketCap.
