Marvel TV Shows: What’s Coming After ‘The Defenders’?
“Marvel’s The Defenders” is over, but there is still plenty for Marvel fans to look forward to. Expect plenty of new superhero TV shows coming soon, including the returns of some of your favorite Defenders.
(Spoiler Alert: There are spoilers for the ending of “The Defenders” below.)
“The Punisher” Season 1 will be the next Marvel show released on Netflix. Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) will be getting vengeance on wrongdoers. The series is set to premiere later this year, and Deborah Ann Woll will reprise her role as Karen Page.
“Jessica Jones” Season 2 started filming earlier this spring. Audiences saw her officially reopen Alias Investigations at the end of “The Defenders,” and that will likely keep her busy in the new episodes. Expect some familiar faces in the new episodes. David Tennant is confirmed to return as the villainous Kilgrave, but it isn’t clear how often he’ll be around. Expect the series to air next year.
“Luke Cage” Season 2 is also filming. Not much is known about the new season, but expect Luke to keep defending Harlem. Claire (Rosario Dawson), Mariah (Alfre Woodard) and Shades (Theo Rossi) are all returning. Expect the series to air next year.
“Daredevil” Season 3 won’t be seen for quite some time, but “The Defenders” already hinted at what to expect. Matt (Charlie Cox) is believed to be dead, but he is actually being healed by nurses in a convent (one of whom may or may not be his mother Maggie). Expect his return to shock his friends. It isn’t clear when Season 3 will premiere though.
“Iron Fist” Season 2 was just announced at San Diego Comic-Con. With Daredevil seemingly gone, Danny (Finn Jones) will try to be the city’s new protector. He’ll have some friends helping. Misty Knight (Simone Missick) will lend support to Danny and Colleen (Jessica Henwick).
And that’s just within the Netflix universe. Marvel has plenty of other TV show too. ABC, Hulu and Fox plan to air Marvel shows as well this fall.
“Inhumans” will premiere in IMAX theaters before heading to ABC. The show follows the royal family of Attilan as a military coup forces them to flee to Hawaii for safety. The series will only be eight episodes. The show will premiere in theaters on Sept. 1 and on ABC Sept. 29.
“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” will return for Season 5 after “Inhumans” wraps up. Season 4 ended with the team taken and Coulson (Clark Gregg) seemingly on a spaceship, so that leaves plenty of opportunities for Season 5. Expect the show to return in November, but no exact premiere date has been announced.
“Runaways” marks Hulu’s first Marvel TV show. The show will follow a group of teens who realize that their parents are all part of an evil, underground organization. The teen drama is being led by co-showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the writers behind “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl.” “Runaways” Season 1 premieres Nov. 21 on Hulu.
“The Gifted” will not take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but instead, it will take place in the X-Men universe. When the Von Strucker family finds out their two teenagers are mutants, they must go on the run. Their father (Stephen Moyer), who hunts mutants for a living, will question everything he knows. “The Gifted” premieres Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox.
