Mattel CEO Says New Barbie Movie Will Be A 'Cultural Event' And A 'Societal Moment'
Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz on Wednesday described the upcoming "Barbie" movie as a “cultural event.”
The "Barbie" Movie is currently in production and many people are hyped over a film being made about the iconic and beloved Barbie doll and her companion Ken. It started production in February during its 63rd birthday celebration.
“Barbie is very much more than a toy,” Kreiz told CNBC’s Julia Boorstin during its Evolve Global Summit.
“And more than a doll. Barbie is a cultural icon, a pop icon. And this movie is really shaping up to be what we believe, would become a societal moment,” he added.
The "Barbie" movie will star Margot Robbie as "Barbie," and Ryan Gosling as "Ken." It is set to be released in July of 2023.
Gosling recently joked with Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday that in his role as Ken he feels like he has picked up on some “Ken-ergy.”
"I have that Ken-ergy that you can feel, obviously," Gosling said.
Robbie celebrated her birthday recently on July 2, while working on the "Barbie" movie set in Los Angeles. The cast and crew surprised her with pink Barbie-themed birthday celebration which included a “Happy Birthday Barbie Margot” birthday cake.
