Courtney Rose is faced with dismal approval rating in next week’s episode of “The Mayor.”

According to the synopsis for Season 1, episode 3 of the ABC series, Courtney’s (Brandon Micheal Hall) ability to lead as the new mayor of Fort Grey is questioned by the citizens as well as his own staff, making him realize that he needs to work smarter not harder when it comes to dirty politics. For instance, Courtney takes an unconventional approach when dealing with Ed Gunt (David Spade) and comes up with a plan to quickly turn public opinion in his favor.

The friction between Courtney and Ed started in the series premiere where the aspiring rapper called out his then-mayoral rival for a non-existent project he claimed to be in progress.

“I’m proud to have led the effort to restore the City Commons, which is now well underway,” Ed said during the mayoral debate.

Ed tried to talk about the fictitious project even further but Courtney cut him off and asked him if he’s actually been there. “It’s not every day that you hear ‘proud’ and ‘City Commons’ used in the same sentence. I mean, I was just there. Have you ever been there, Mr. Gunt?” Courtney asked. “There is so much trash [in there] Google Maps has listed it as a mountain.”

Apparently, that little clash helped Courtney defeat Ed in the mayoral race. But even though Courtney is now the mayor, his rivalry with Ed continues as his former election opponent is a member of the City Council.

Just last episode, Courtney and Ed got into another dispute when the latter cut the music program of Fort Grey Elementary. Courtney had already promised to buy new musical instruments and digital sound system for the students when he found out that the City Council planned not to give any budget for the school’s music program. Courtney tried to solve the issue by vetoing the council’s proposed budget, but Ed overruled him.

Feeling that he failed the students, Courtney found himself confiding in his chief of staff Valentina (Lea Michele). “I don’t see how anyone can look at those kids faces and not want to give them what I had,” Courtney said.

Courtney’s words gave Val an idea. Hoping that Ed would still change his mind, Val brought the kids from Fort Grey Elementary to the City Council chamber, where the kids played their instruments in front of everyone. When a video of their performance went viral, Ed got a phone call that made him reverse his decision to cut the music program.

While Courtney has already won against Ed twice, it’s remains to be seen whether the young politician will get to outsmart Ed the next time around.

“The Mayor” Season 1, episode 3, titled “Buyer’s Remorse,” airs on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 9:30 p.m. EDT on ABC.
