Meat Recall Broadened To Encompass 468,000 Pounds Of Manda Packing Co Products

The Manda Packing Co. has expanded a recall to include about 468,000 pounds of cow, pig and turkey products as a result of possible contamination by Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Friday.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease, the USDA noted. Listeriosis can cause high fever, nausea, neck stiffness and severe headache. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and people who are HIV-positive or are undergoing chemotherapy.

Based in Baton Rouge, La., the family-owned Manda reported that deli meat offerings produced at its Baker, La., plant are subject to the recall. They include corned beef, ham, ham shanks, hog head cheese, pastrami, roast beef, tasso pork and turkey breast with Sell-By dates between May 13 and July 2, the company said.

"The action [to issue the recall] is being taken out of an abundance of caution as there are no known illnesses associated with these products to date," Josh Yarborough, Manda's director of quality assurance and food safety, said in a statement.

Nonetheless, the USDA has categorized the action as a Class I recall, which the department on its online site defined as meaning, "This is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."

The products were shipped to distributors and retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas, the USDA reported. The products may have been sliced at retail delis, so they may not bear helpful packaging information for identification purposes.
