A 27-year-old British man was left hungry and upset after discovering that his box of chicken nuggets from a fast-food restaurant contained pickles instead.
The man, identified only as Stuart, had ordered the McDonald's chicken McNuggets from the chain's Penn Road branch in Wolverhampton at around 10 p.m. on Sept. 14 after his shift, The Daily Mirror reported.
The National Health Service worker, however, discovered upon returning home to Wombourne that his large chicken nuggets meal contained pickles instead, according to the outlet.
"When he got home and opened the box, he looked like he could just cry. We couldn't believe it," Stuart's 25-year-old girlfriend, Megan Taylor, was quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror. "At first, I laughed, but then I saw his face and I could tell he was gutted."
"He was so hungry, and he just wanted to eat his dinner. You don't expect to open your meal and see a load of gherkins," she added.
Stuart had ordered from the fast-food restaurant because it was "quick," Taylor claimed.
"His work is just crazy, and he never knows when he’s going to come home or even get two minutes to himself to get a bite to eat," she explained.
The couple, who are expecting their first baby together, suggested that the mix-up may have been a prank orchestrated by staff.
"It must be intentional because how can you mistake gherkins for nuggets?" Taylor said.
"They don't look anything alike, and surely they would have noticed while they were filling the box if it was a mistake," she added.
A spokesperson for McDonald's issued a statement in response to the incident.
"We are sorry to hear about this customer's experience. We would encourage them to contact our Customer Services team, who can provide them with further assistant," the spokesperson said.
A similar incident occurred in Androscoggin County, Maine, in late June when a woman discovered that her 11-year-old son's signature Happy Meal from McDonald's contained prescription drugs.
Police received a complaint on June 30 of the family finding Suboxone, a prescription medicine used to treat those who are addicted to opioids, in the order that they picked up from a McDonald's branch in Auburn, Maine.
Two of the restaurant's employees, 43-year-old Michael Sevey and 29-year-old Mariah Grant, were later arrested after it was revealed they were responsible for the incident.
In another incident, a 42-year-old man in Polk County, Iowa, was charged after he threatened to blow up a local McDonald's branch because his chicken nuggets meal did not come with dipping sauce.
