The unclaimed jackpot on Wednesday was worth a total of $52 million with a cash option of $30.3 million. The next Mega Millions drawing, which is worth an estimated $65 million with a cash value of $37.9 million, will be drawn on Aug. 12 at 11 p.m. ET.
On Wednesday, players from Georgia, New York, and Virginia hit the Match 5, each winning a $1 million prize. However, the players did not play with the 3X Megaplier and missed out on the chance to win $3 million.
Aside from the three instant millionaires, there were plenty of other smaller monetary prizes that resulted from the night.
There were 24 players who hit the Match 4 plus gold Mega Ball and won $10,000. Meanwhile, six players matched four numbers plus the gold Mega Ball with the 3X Megaplier, winning $30,000 apiece. The rest of the prizes from the night ranged between $2 and $1,500.
The latest Mega Millions jackpot comes after a player from Virginia discovered he hit the Match 5 after initially being told he wasn't a winner.
Malcolm Meredith purchased a ticket for the May 20 Mega Millions drawing and later showed it to a person who told him he wasn't a winner. However, he tucked away the ticket and got a second opinion a few weeks later.
The second individual told Meredith he was a winner, but the player didn't find out the value of his prize until he visited to the Northern Virginia Customer Service Center in Woodbridge, Virginia.
"I was hoping and praying," Meredith told the Virginia Lottery.
Meredith learned he won $1 million after using the Easy Pick option, which allows the computer to randomly generate lottery numbers.
Jackpot winners can receive their grand prize winnings through a one-time lump sum payment or an annuity.
Those who opt for the annuity receive one immediate payment, followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year.
Mega Millions can be played in 45 states, as well as the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands.
