Meghan Markle, British Reporters Are Both Victims Of Online Abuse, Trolls
Meghan Markle has been in the center on abuse ever since she got into a relationship with Prince Harry.
Her African-American heritage has also sparked threats. There was also a recent Anthrax scare that proved not everyone approves of Markle and Prince Harry’s relationship.
But a group of British reporters recently claimed that they are experiencing the same online abuse and are accused of being racist.
Emily Andrews, the royal reporter for The Sun, said, “Any kind of negative or perceived negative comment about her is perceived as racist. If you’re on Twitter you’re used to getting trolled and abused, but I think over the last couple of weeks, as the wedding countdown has really begun, a lot of the reporters here in the U.K. have been accused of racism.”
Emily Nash, the royal reporter for Hello Magazine, said she was surprised by the attacks directed at reporters like her. “Whenever you post a photograph of Harry and Meghan together, or some comment about where they’re going next, you’ll have trolls coming online and complaining, being quite abusive about her and Harry’s choice of bride. It’s very depressing and I just think it’s small-minded ignorance,” she said.
Last week, a parcel filled with white powder was sent to the Kensington Palace. Royal correspondent Omid Scobie said that the royal family is treating the incident as a hate crime.
“What’s been different with Meghan is her background, that she’s bi-racial, she’s spoken out about it, she’s very proud of it. We’ve seen a lot of people come and attack her from that angle and I think that’s been the really unpleasant side of this,” he explained.
But in the wake of all of the abuse and online trolls, Markle continues to do her job as a member of the royal family. She recently joined Prince Harry, Prince William, and Kate Middleton in their first joint official engagement for the Royal Foundation.
