Meghan Markle, Prince Harry Not 'Taking Part' In Reality Series Despite Netflix Deal
KEY POINTS
- Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are not doing a reality show for Netflix despite what The Sun claimed
- Prince Harry and Markle are not expected to appear on their Netflix shows unless necessary
- The Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed as producers and not as actors
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry set the record straight when they said they are not doing any reality show after closing a multimillion deal with Netflix.
"The Duke and Duchess are not taking part in any reality shows," Prince Harry and Markle said in a statement to Deadline.
The royal couple released the statement after The Sun published a report claiming that they were joining a reality series as part of their deal with Netflix. The British tabloid alleged that Prince Harry and Markle agreed to film the reality show.
It also quoted an anonymous source claiming their show would be "tasteful" and the couple would want to give the people a glimpse of their lives. However, the rumored docuseries focusing on their philanthropy work is not happening as the couple just said they are not taking part in any reality series on the streaming service.
The Telegraph associate editor and royal correspondent Camilla Tominey previouly discussed the couple's Netflix deal with media analyst Richard Greenfield and celebrity agent Jonathan Shalit. Tominey believed that the success of the Sussex's show would depend on their visibility. The other two agreed, but they didn't think Prince Harry and Markle would be visible on the show because they signed as producers, not actors. However, they might still appear in other projects if necessary.
"I don’t know the terms of the Sussexes’ deal, but my gut instinct is it is going to be less about them starring and more about them using their global star power in attracting people to work on projects like American Factory. This is a production deal, first and foremost," Greenfield said.
"I am sure that when it is relevant to the shows they are making, then they will be in them. The most important word for any broadcaster is ‘authenticity’, so they would be well advised to only champion issues they have got a genuine interest in," Shalit said.
He added that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are unlikely to seek the limelight actively because they are already popular due to their family background.
