Meghan Markle is not yet a British citizen. The Duchess of Sussex applied for the citizenship months ago.

While speaking with Daily Mail, Markle’s friend said that the former actress is aware that the process is quite slow. The source also confirmed that Markle hasn’t received any special treatment even though she’s a member of the royal family.

“It might seem extraordinary, given that she's been married to the Queen’s grandson for 18 months, but she accepts that it's a slow process,” the source said.

Two years ago, Prince Harry’s communication secretary, Jason Knauf, said that the “Suits” alum would be compliant with the immigration requirements at all times. Knauf said that Markle will also be applying for British citizenship, which could take up to a couple of years.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry and Markle’s son, Archie, is already a British citizen. The 6-month-old was born in London on May 6, which automatically made him a British citizen.

The royal couple may also decide to apply for Archie’s dual citizenship in the United States since Markle is still an American citizen.

Meanwhile, UK immigration’s official website states that individuals who have resided in the United Kingdom for at least five years may apply for citizenship. Since Markle has only been living in London for over two years, she still cannot be granted citizenship.

Other requirements include being of good character, currently residing in the United Kingdom, meet the English language requirements, pass the Life in the UK test, has traveled outside of the UK for more than 90 days in the last year, and more.

Applicants are required to submit an individual application and to apply through a National Checking Service. Applicants may also apply through an agent or representative.

It can take six months or longer for a decision to be made regarding an individual’s application. “ Once a decision is made, or if any further information is needed from you, you will be contacted by UK Visas and Immigration,” the website states.
