Meghan Markle’s curtsy when she met the queen of Tonga was recently criticized by royal fans.

Martha Cliff, a journalist for Daily Mail, revealed that royal fans criticized the Duchess of Sussex’s curtsy after a video of her doing the gesture was uploaded online last week.

One fan called Markle’s curtsy as the worst curtsy she has ever seen. Another person said that it seemed Prince Harry’s wife was unsure if she was supposed to curtsy in front of the King and Queen of Tonga.

Another fan also said that Markle’s curtsy was the shortest one in royal history. At least one person also compared her to Princess Eugenie, who did the “best” curtsy to Queen Elizabeth II following her recent royal wedding.

“Are you sure she didn’t know how to curtsy? She looks unsure. I kind of feel sorry for her looks like she wasn’t sure and didn’t have the time to ask,” one person commented.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time that the Duchess of Sussex hesitated before doing a curtsy. Earlier this year, she and Prince Harry attended the Trooping the Colour at the Buckingham Palace with the other members of the royal family. She was seen asking the Duke of Sussex if it was time to curtsy when the Queen arrived.

Adam Patridge, an etiquette expert, explained to Express how the perfect curtsy is done.

“A curtsy should be a discreet, brief movement and not a ballet plie, or a grand, sweeping descent to the ground. From a standing position, transfer your weight to one foot (usually the left). Place the ball of your other foot behind and slightly to the outside of your standing ankle,” he said.

Jean Broke-Smith, a royal etiquette expert, said that when meeting Her Majesty, the 92-year-old will typically put her hand out and that is the cue to do a curtsy.

“You should not look at her as you curtsy but keep your eyes lowered,” Smith said.
