Twitter users mocked Melania Trump for misspelling her next travel destination.
President Donald Trump and his wife Melania are bound to visit India later this month. The first lady made the announcement on social media by sharing Narendra Modi’s post on Twitter. The prime minister of India considered the POTUS and FLOTUS their “esteemed guests” and the visit a “very special one” as it will go along way to cement India’s friendship with the U.S.A.
“Thank you @narendramodi for the kind invitation. Looking forward to visiting Ahmedabad & New Dehli later this month. @POTUS & I are excited for the trip & to celebrate the close ties between the #USA & #India,” Melania wrote.
However, many noticed that the FLOTUS misspelled the place as she wrote “New Dehli” instead of “New Delhi.” Melania didn’t correct the mistake despite the backlash she received.
“It's New Delhi! First spell, then travel,” @SaraNanai commented.
“New Delhi. D-e-l-h-i. How embarrassing,” @TheRealNormaJ added.
Others went on and mocked the FLOTUS by bringing up her claims that she speaks five languages. Others mentioned the Einstein visa to make a dig at the FLOTUS.
“Always a snark. Do u speak 5 languages. Silly,” @lucyuns wrote.
“‘Einstein Visa’ recipients dont need to know geography... or spelling...Or do they???” @Siberyn3 opined.
“Since she cannot speak English don’t expect correct spelling,” @tritevk wrote.
Despite the backlash, some said that Melania didn’t really make a mistake because it was the same. Several defended Melania and stressed that it was the old way in spelling the place.
“Nope.. The first lady is right. In Hindu tradition, it is Dehli,” @NayakK13 explained.
“Actually it was the original way of saying in Hindi! Delhi is anglicized way!” @FriendofAm agreed.
In the book “The National Geographical Journal of India” Volume 40, it was revealed that the name of the place has several variations with “Dilli” being the most popular name and pronounced as “Dilli,” “Dehli” or “Delhi.” This is probably the reason Melania did not change the spelling in her post despite the backlash.
It isn’t known if Melania has already visited India before, but she already met the Indian Prime Minister when he stopped by at the White House, Express reported. Meanwhile, Trump visited Mumbai in 2014 to launch Trump Tower, where his organization’s oversea operations are largest. Also, the POTUS owns 16 properties in India before he was elected president.
