A 20-year-old woman in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh — described by her family as being mentally ill — was allegedly sexually assaulted nearly half a year ago by a group of men, who also purportedly recorded the act.
The unnamed victim had returned to her home in Rampur in July for the first time following her marriage to celebrate a festival when she was trapped on a cane field and gang-raped by three men, newspaper The Times of India reported, citing the girl's father.
The men recorded the sexual assault and threatened the victim to remain silent about it, according to the outlet.
One of the men ended up sharing the footage of the rape on social media last Sunday, which alerted the woman's family of the sexual assault.
A case was then registered against the three at a police station in Rampur.
"We received the video of the assault, along with a written complaint against three persons from the woman's father," additional superintendent of Rampur Sansar Singh was quoted as saying.
The three were booked under Section 376D (gang rape) of the Indian Penal Code, the officer said. They were also booked under Section 67(a) of the Information Technology Act of 2000 for sharing the video of the rape on social media.
The video was forwarded to authorities for forensic analysis, and the woman was asked for a statement.
A search is currently ongoing for the three men who have absconded, according to police.
"We want strict action against [the accused]," the victim's father said.
The father claimed that the three men "ruined" his daughter's life and that "even her husband doesn't want to live with her now."
A similar incident happened in Uttar Pradesh in September when two men raped a 17-year-old girl and recorded the crime, which they later shared on social media.
The minor victim was lured into a garden in a village under the jurisdiction of the Bhopa police station on Sept. 19 and raped by the two accused men, identified as Shubham and Ashish.
Authorities learned of the incident after a video of the crime circulated on social media.
A rape case was registered against the two men, and they were arrested.
