  • Manchester City beat Tottenham Hotspur to claim the Carabao Cup title
  • Mesut Ozil took a swipe at Tottenham for losing to Manchester City
  • New Spurs manager Ryan Mason made a bold admission after his first title match

Tottenham had just been criticized by one of its most notable past rivals.

Former Arsenal attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil was one of the firsts to comment on Tottenham’s devastating Carabao Cup loss to Manchester City on Sunday.

On his official Twitter account, Ozil wrote, “It remains dusty,” implying that Tottenham has a trophy-less cabinet full of dust.

During his time at Arsenal, Ozil has had several battles with derby rivals Tottenham.

Amid his tumultuous stint with the Gunners last year, Ozil was linked to a move to Tottenham, something then-Spurs manager Jose Mourinho quickly dismissed.

“Who told him that Tottenham would be interested in signing him?” Mourinho said of Ozil transfer rumors.

Tottenham is now under the leadership of former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason. The EFL Cup final against Manchester City was Mason’s first title match as Tottenham manager.

After the game, Mason bared that despite having some good moments, it was a “difficult” match to win.

“It was a difficult match,” the newly-appointed Tottenham coach said in his post-match press conference. “I thought in the first half we rode our luck on a couple of occasions. There were times where it was controlled.”

“In the second half we had a good moment and some set plays and I felt while we didn’t create much in the second half, neither did they,” he explained. “It’s difficult to concede from a set-piece though.”

Mason further pointed out that Tottenham didn’t have enough time to prepare for such an important game.

“We didn’t have long to work on it but that’s the way I want to go forward during my time here,” the coach said. “Man City has had five or six years with the same coach so they’ve much more time to get so comfortable with the way they play.”

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, on the other hand, is pleased to have led the Citizens to their fourth EFL Cup title. However, he also emphasized the need to be ready for the “most important title of the season.”

“Now we rest and prepare for the [Champions League semi-final] first leg against Paris Saint-Germain, then after that, we are two games away from trying to win the most important title of the season,” Guardiola said.

“The Premier League is the nicest one, the one where I am most proud when we are able to do it,” he continued. “We are 10 points clear, we need two victories, and in between the games in this crazy schedule we are going to try to win the next one against Crystal Palace.”
