Miami Dade College West Campus Parking Garage Collapse Kills 2
Two people are dead and another is trapped after a nearly completed parking garage on the west campus of Miami Dade College collapsed Wednesday.
The second body was found in the wreckage around nightfall, police told NBC Miami.
One person remained trapped in the rubble. Six rescue workers were with him, giving him oxygen and attending to his needs as others removed the heavy debris, said Capt. Louie Fernandez of Fire Rescue. Another person who had been trapped was rescued.
"The person cannot be moved. We literally have to lift and remove tons of debris around him," he said.
The garage was being worked on by about 30 people when it collapsed at 11:40 a.m. EDT, leading to one death, one trapped person, two missing people and several injuries, CBS Miami reported.
Witness Kayla Pulido described the scene for the station.
“I was just sitting at my desk and just so happens that I turned around and I looked because I have a window, and as soon as I look I see the first rack hit and a whole bunch of dust come up,” Pulido said. “And people were screaming, and I run out and one of my co-workers starts to call 911. I know there was people up there because this morning you could see them putting up things. I was terrified.”
Search and rescue operations are being hampered by the “structural integrity” problems of the parking garage, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Capt. Louis Fernandez told CBS Miami.
The $22.5 million garage, being built by the Ajax Building Corp., was two months away from completion.
No students were injured during the collapse, Miami Dade College spokesman Juan Mendieta told CBS Miami.
Classes were canceled at the west campus of the Miami-area college after the collapse, the school said.
Five people were treated at hospitals and three others were given medical attention at the scene, according to CBS Miami.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Arnold Piedrahita said workers could be heard calling for help after the multi-story garage caved in, the Associated Press reported.
The west campus, a new addition to Miami Dade College, is located in the Miami suburb of Doral, Fla, according to the Palm Beach Post.
Aside from workers with Ajax Building Corp., employees from subcontractors on the parking garage were working on it when it collapsed, the Miami Herald reported.
The parking garage was being built to alleviate parking problems at Miami Dade College’s main campus at 3800 NW 115th Ave. in Doral, the paper reported.
The city’s police chief, Ricardo Gomez, said it was fortuntate the garage was not complete.
“It’s a bad day for us, but it’s also a good day because there could have been a lot more tragedy,” he told the paper.
The west campus opened in 2007 and serves 5,000 students.
