Mick Schumacher, son of iconic Formula 1 race champion Michael Schumacher had a cathartic moment when he drove his father’s Ferrari’s 2002 F1 championship car on the Fiorano track recently.

Following his father’s illustrious footsteps, Mick drove the same Ferrari that his Formula One champion father piloted for one of the world titles.

Recounting the experience, Mick wrote on Instagram: “I have been fortunate to be able to drive that actual car in Fiorano; the first time at all that I was driving an F1 car on this famous track - a dream come true for me, a very special day.”

Chassis number 219 was part of Michael Schumacher’s fifth title-winning season at Imola as well before the A1-Ring and French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours.

Historic Ferrari to be auctioned

The historic Ferrari will be auctioned in November last ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the RM Sotheby’s Yas Marina Circuit. Along with the title-winning Ferrari, a Benetton B192 driven by Schumacher in 1992 will also go into auction.

The Ferrari is currently owned by a private collector. The auction is expected to fetch $5.5m to $7.5million while the Benetton will be getting somewhere around $1.1million.

A part of the auction money will go to the Keep Fighting Foundation of the Schumacher’s family.

Awaiting next Schumacher in Lewis Hamilton

Meanwhile, all eyes are on British driver Lewis Hamilton who is in limelight with his sixth championship and expectations are soaring on the 7th title and the moment he could equal the legendary Michael Schumacher.

A report by ESPN notes that the year 2020 could be a record-setting year for Hamilton.

Ross Brawn, Formula One managing director of motorsports expressed the confidence that Lewis Hamilton will be able to overtake Michael Schumacher's seven world titles record if he sticks to Mercedes. Brawn’s comments came amidst rumors that Hamilton may move to Ferrari in 2021.

When asked by Channel 4 if he felt Hamilton would outshine Schumacher’s magic number, Brawn said: “I think he probably will. If Lewis stays with Mercedes he will win more World Championships.”

On Mick Schumacher’s nostalgic moment, Oliver Camelin, a car specialist at RM Sotheby’s commented: “Bringing together Mick and the F2002 was a special moment for everyone involved as well as a historic moment for both Formula 1 and Ferrari.”

Calling it a once-in-a-lifetime experience, he said, “To witness Michael’s son, in this incredible car, at the home of Scuderia Ferrari underlined the significance of the F2002 to Michael and Ferrari’s racing legacy.”
